Ed Sheeran & Elton John - 'Merry Christmas' Single Review

12/03/2021

The newest Christmas song is by Ed Sheeran and Elton John, two artists who have definitely left their names on history despite the huge age difference; Ed Sheeran is just thirty, whilst Sir Elton John will be seventy-five next year.

Their new song is absolutely beautiful, with their voices blending together perfectly to create the kind of sound which I haven't heard on a Christmas song in a very long time.

Earlier this year, Elton John released an album entitled 'The Lockdown Sessions', on which he collaborated with many artists who are big names in the industry today, such as Dua Lipa. Here, he has topped off his star-studded list with perhaps the biggest one (disregarding that of Glen Campbell), and this song is better than any which were on that album.

And the music video is pretty awesome too; it references lots of other famous Christmas scenes such as The Snowman (1982), directed by Diane Jackson, (where Ed Sheeran replaces the small ginger boy), and also the infamous shot of boyband East 17 during their Christmas song Stay Another Day (1994). As if it wasn't already obvious enough that Merry Christmas was a Christmas song!

However, my criticism of the song is that the line 'Merry Christmas everyone' has definitely been done before. I am sure that two great artists like Ed Sheeran and Elton John could have come up with something a little more original... but the line doesn't necessarily make the song a bad one.
